General Machinery Ltd. is a privately-owned company that was incorporated in Uganda in March 1965. It has operations in Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, and is in the process of setting up operations in Juba, South Sudan.
General Machinery Group employs approximately 350 staff, 99 percent of whom are Ugandans.
The company began by selling agricultural tractors and machinery, with related after-sales services. It was also involved in the import and distribution of construction machinery, both for road building and sundry site development, and in the import and sale of motor vehicles.
Later, General Machinery Ltd expanded to water drilling, supply of pumps and pipes, steel fabrication and galvanizing, and finally, marketing, installaing and maintaining diesel generators.
Following the expansion in scope and volume of activies, the company created several, individually managed subsidiaries. The group now has ten such subsidiaries, divided into service companies and operating companies. The service companies offer advisory services, customs clearance, warehousing and banking services. The operating companies— Victoria Motors, Victoria Engineering, Victoria Equipment and Victoria Pumps—service the oil sector amongst others:
Victoria Motors Ltd was incorporated in 1980 and employs around 100 staff. It currently handles the distributorship of Mitsubishi vehicles, Renault trucks, Mitsubishi Fuso Trucks, Yokohama tyres, among others, offering customers both purchase and lease options. Oil sector client companies supplied include Pearl Engineering, Epsilon Uganda, Weatherford, Mineral Services Ltd among others.
Victoria Engineering, registered in 1998 and employing around 60 staff, manages tractor trailers and water bowsers, galvanises steel structures, and supplies and installs generator sets. This division also has a machine shop with crankshaft regrinding, line boring and cylinder refacing capacity. It supplies and services generator sets for Tullow Oil, Mineral Services Ltd., among others.
Victoria Pumps is the drilling, pipe and pump division of the group, employing around 25 staff. It offers a range of products as well as the following services: hydro geological investigation and feasibility studies in water supply projects; borehole drilling; platform casting and pump installation, and training of community hand pump mechanics. The division also offers skills training in mining and drilling of water, oil and gas. In terms of oil industry work, Victoria Pumps has mainly supplied Tullow Oil with water borehole drilling and rehabilitation services.
Victoria Equipment is the construction equipment division of the group and began operations in 1981. The division offers comprehensive sales, repair, maintenance service and training. It currently employs around 25 people. It is the Uganda distributor for Komatsu earth moving equipment (both for sale and lease) and Dynapac Heavy & light compaction equipment, under Atlas Copco. Oil industry companies supplied by this division include:Strategic Logistics, Collin Construction, Ogec (Formally DMS Minerals), Colas Uganda, and Pearl Engineering .
